Ethnic Grocery Stores, Milwaukee, and Old Favorites

It's been a dry spell for new recipes around here this week.  Old favorites are the order of the day! It's not that I haven't been doing my usual amount of cooking; however, it hasn't been anything to blog about.

I made a batch of pumpkin butter for (most likely) the last time in the season.  It's just not a warm weather item for me.  I have chocolate chop cookies in the oven as a thank you to the school activities director in thanks for finding a dropped cell phone.  I made Pad Thai a couple nights ago...and enjoyed Paul's fajitas last night (future guest blogger).   There are a number of recipes "on deck" for new and exciting things in the next few weeks.  But this week...not too much to report.

One thing I love about Milwaukee is the ethnic grocery stores.  We experienced two cultures last Sunday in a matter of minutes, really.  First, the three of us went to the Asian grocery store to stock up on some things for Pad Thai and mango sticky rice (and other things as well).  This is the store my Thai friend introduced to me before she moved.  The other customers, as well as the workers, are helpful.  In fact, we learned how to make a rice moonshine as we purchased our groceries!  We were stopped from buying the mangoes like we get in our grocery store and steered to the sweeter mangoes for sticky rice.
not so good for sticky rice

We drove just minutes away for a quick stop at a Mexican grocery store to stock up on salsas and fresh tortillas and more limes!

There are things that don't put me in a pro-Milwaukee camp.  Typically March and April are reasons to abandon this city; however, it has been sunny and warm this year.  Milwaukee does have some awesome things though....it's easy to get free on street parking downtown most of the time, the cool lake breeze in the summer feels great, it's easy to ride your bike out in the country with very little pedaling to get out of the city, there are diverse restaurants, and there are multiple ethnic grocery stores.  And you can get to multiple stores in just a few hours.  In fact,  in half a day it would be a cinch to get to an Indian, Asian, Mexican, and an Italian market.

Fun cooking ahead....
